Saxon Phonics Intervention, Home Study Kit

If you have older, struggling students who are reading and spelling below their grade level, perhaps it's time for Phonics Intervention. This systematic program will put them on the road to reading success! Lorna Simmons, a former classroom and special education teacher, created the program when her oldest son was still having difficulty reading upon finishing second grade.
In keeping with the Saxon philosophy, this curriculum builds on prior learning, and presents information in small, carefully sequenced increments. Covering consonants, vowels, and reading comprehension, the program offers explicit, systematic strategies for decoding and spelling words. Consumable work sheets, speed drills, and vocabulary tests reinforce learning and provide daily reading opportunities. Students also learn dictionary skills through progressively difficult alphabetizing activities.
The teacher's manual includes all lessons, assessments, speed drills, word lists, and reduced versions of student materials. Kit includes a teacher's manual, student workbook, and classroom materials. Grades 4 and up.

Explode the Code, Book 8

Explode the Code Book 8, which is for use in the elementary grades, continues to reinforce the concepts necessary for intermediate reading. The workbook goes through a series of lessons of approximately 8 pages in length. These lessons follow a consistent format designed to reinforce phonetic patterns in a sequential manner. Within each lesson children have extensive practice in matching, reading, copying, spelling, and writing sounds and words. In this more advanced level, the tasks include reading a story and then answering comprehension questions, making words by joining syllables, and building and strengthening vocabulary through crossword puzzles. Black, sketchy illustrations, drawn by children, highlight the lesson exercises. The simple directions and consistent format allow students to progress independently. The workbooks provide teachers and students with an instructive and entertaining program to supplement any reading and spelling program. Book 8 primarily focuses on suffixes and endings. Grade 4 Teacher's key available below.

Beyond The Code, Book 4

This series develops important comprehension and thinking skills at the earliest level. Designed to accompany the first four books of Explode The Code, the books contain stories with exercises that follow the same phonetic structure as that series. Each story is preceded by writing and spelling activities that introduce new sight words and teach phonetic patterns. The charmingly illustrated stories are followed by questions and exercises that develop comprehension as well as critical thinking.

Book 4's engagingly illustrated stories include Nelson Went Overboard for Dogs, What a Scare!, A Different Kind of Library, A Birthday to Remember, The Treasure Hunt, and A Wild Ride. Introductory exercises teach word families and vocabulary, while follow-up questions develop students' understanding of the stories and encourage their reasoning abilities. Drawings accompany many of the new words to help students understand the vocabulary. After each story, students can complete illustrations by adding their own drawings. Grade 4.
