I love how everything in home education can be tied to the student's interests. As a young child I was fascinated with space. My mom would read space books to me. With the help of my dad I was able to look through my telescope and find Saturn! Because I had such a big interest in this topic I soaked up all the information I could about rockets, satellites, space stations, the sun, moons and planets.
When I was in the 8th or 9th grade I had a huge interest in house plans and car designs. I would draw pictures all the time and keep them in a folder. My mom, having great foresight gave me a technical drawing book to learn from and I loved it! Later in high-school and in college I took some engineering and architectural drafting courses. Engineering and drafting is now an everyday part of my life!
It is rare that students find their niche right away after they graduate from high-school, but I believe that homeschool parents can build an education on their child's interests to help give them a more solid direction and more confidence in their future.
I read an interesting article that talked about a young lady who just graduated from home and is going on to college. Her education was built around her interests and she did not have any regrets about being homeschooled. She is ready for life. "Forget all the home schooling stereotypes. Walker is an articulate, bright young woman with an active academic and social life."
