Mental Math
These Mental Math questions (for Grade 4) were created in an attempt to correct two common problem areas in all levels of math in an easy and fun way for both students and teachers. These activities are designed to take only 10 minutes at the beginning of each math class, and the same questions may be asked in a variety of ways. The questions are based on the terminology used in standardized tests. These activities are set up to help the students become self-disciplined, good listeners and self-motivated. Most sheets/exercises are presented in a one-page-per-day format. During the first semester, specific Third Grade Review topics covered in this level are concepts of numbers, mixed numbers, computation, application. Fourth Grade material covers concepts of numbers, application and computation. The second semester cover Fourth Grade concepts of numbers, mixed numbers, application, and computation.

Real-Life Math
NCTM standards consider problem solving to be the focus of mathematical instruction. The scenarios students encounter in Real-Life Math Investigations are familiar and very real to them because the topics focus on problems of thier everyday world. Students develop their own strategies and plans for solving the problems they face. The open-minded nature of many of the problems steers students away from looking for a signle correct answer. Common sense and logic help them to determine whether their answer makes sense. Skills include whole-number operations, graphing, geometry, fractions, logic, algebra, probability, and more. A number of math skills are required in each activity. Great for multiage classrooms, learning buddies, and small-group work.

Read It! Draw It! Solve It!
Read It! Draw It! Solve It! Problem Solving for Intermediate Grades offers a unique blend of practice in language arts and math skills through word problems at the appropriate reading level for grades 4 and 5. Students read the word problem, then "solve" it by drawing, and finally, write their response. The drawing experience allows students to concretely visualize the problem and to creatively express its solution. Some concepts that students will be asked to illustrate in this book for grades 4 and 5 are: alternate forms of representing whole number computation; fractional parts of wholes and sets; representing decimal parts of a whole; simple percents; getting information from and creating graphs and charts; writing problems. At the fourth- and fifth-grade level, problems are especially varied. This was done so students will treat each problem as a unique entity and think for themselves about what is need to solve that particular problem. Instead of a unit on measurement followed by a unit on multiplication, for example, students will encounter a fraction problem on one page, a measurement problem on the next, and so on. The book includes a blank blackline master template to use to create your own word problems. Reproducible
