Horizons Math
No more hours of boring, endless repetition - your kids will actually thank you for this interactive math curriculum! Each level has two student workbooks, but the teacher handbook is the main component of the program. All instruction is provided through one-on-one teacher instruction, which is the biggest difference between Horizons and the self-guided Lifepacs.
Another big focus in Horizons is hands-on learning using a variety of manipulatives, which can mostly be found around the house: pencils, pipe cleaners, play or real money, thread, a timer, clock, yardstick, etc.
Novice home-educators should not be intimidated by the amount of teacher involvement as it is carefully layed out in the beginning of each year's teacher handbook. The teacher handbook also provides a variety of teaching suggestions and supplemental activities for additional practice.
The concepts covered in Horizons 2 include:
Two-digit Addition and Subtraction with Carrying and Borrowing
Multiplication Facts for 1-10
Place Value
Number Order
Sets
Correspondence
Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers
Graphs
Fractions
Measurement
Temperature
Estimation
Ratio
Perimeter
Volume
Decimals in Money

Making Math Meaningful
This level includes a student book (stock # 48013) and the parent/teacher book. David Quine, author of Making Math Meaningful, says:"The math instruction of children should proceed on two lines. The young child should begin to learn the basic facts and to understand math concepts, and his understanding should be well in advance of his skill to compute. The scale should be tipped in favor of a concrete understanding of math concepts so that he can think mathematically." In this series your children will: learn to reason, learn the math facts, learn to solve word problems, really understand math ideas, and finally have fun doing math. Making Math Meaningful is perfect for all learning styles. There are activities using manipulatives for kinesthetic learners, activities using natural conversations for auditory learners, and activities using pictures for visual learners. The lesson plans are clear and easy to use. The student book is a workbook. The pages are not reproducible. Level 2 covers addition and subtraction, place value, addition and subtraction of real objects, addition and subtraction of symbols, part whole, and multiplication and division.
