Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary
Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary 1 is designed around a weekly schedule with a variety of practice formats. There is a 160-lesson student worktext, and a teachers Handbook which includes daily lesson plans. Built in flexibility allows the teacher to add words to the weekly lists and to alter the specifications for the writing assignments to tailor the material to the individual student needs.
The complete set also includes a student dictionary that lists all of the words and definitions used in the student lessons.
This program can be used alone or as a companion to the Horizons Phonics & Reading 1.

A Reason For Spelling
How do children best learn to spell? Research says it takes more than just rote memorization and drill. Activities with a purpose are the key! And what better purpose than learning Scripture values.
Every weekly lesson begins with a story - a contemporary theme story that develops key principles found in that week's Scripture verse. Daily lessons continue to build on this theme and help make learning to spell FUN! In addition, A Reason For Spelling® encourages regular personal writing activities in a values-based setting. This gives children a meaningful context for focusing on correct spelling.
A Reason For Spelling® combines the latest research on how children learn to spell with all the strengths of traditional programs. It integrates spelling with reading, writing, and language arts, while teaching children all the high-frequency base words, plus hundreds of other word forms as well!
A Reason For Spelling® covers six grade levels, with over 200 pages of learning activities in each student workbook. In addition, the detailed Teacher Guidebook provides a wealth of enrichment ideas!
A Reason For Spelling® incorporates a variety of successful teaching techniques: daily practice, self-correction, visual imaging, detailed student feedback, learning games, the test/study/test sequence, and much more. It also includes special activities in every lesson to help motivate visual, auditory, tactile, and multi-faceted learners.

ACSI Spelling
Research is the foundation for the methods used to teach spelling in this series. Three strategies used for spelling instruction reflect that research: sound-letter relationships, visual memory, and meanings. Word lists are purposely NOT presented as word families but instead are designed to teach most-frequently-used words as well as spelling rules. Writing/composition activities are the major part of each spelling lesson at all levels, and a number of these incorporate Bible topics. Foundational spelling principles such as sound-letter relationships, understanding the alphabet and letter order in words, copying words, building visual memory, and beginning writing experiences are the focus for the first 12 weeks. Application of these principles is then reinforced.
