Stepping Stones: A Path to Critical Thinking
Stepping Stones is a new series of workbooks designed to introduce students to critical thinking skills that they will use throughout their academic careers. All too often, critical thinking skills are not presented to young students in a systematic way. The books in the Stepping Stones series strive to present critical thinking in a way that is clear and not threatening to young children. Puzzles cover language arts, math, science, and social studies subjects.
The exercises in Stepping Stones are visually appealing and task-oriented, and an important feature is that many of the puzzles are open-ended. There is a strong emphasis on students' ability to justify and explain their answers. This pushes students to think carefully and rationally about their answers rather than just choosing an answer randomly.
Book 3 has a task-oriented focus. Students first work through closed Warm-up Exercises that focus on comprehension of major curriculum areas. They then move on to open-ended, task-based puzzles. They are presented with a set of information that they must use to creatively solve a problem. The puzzles are grouped thematically within each section to facilitate doing work by subject area. Grades K-2.

Starting Comprehension Visually
Children learn to read by reading. In this series students "get their feet wet" in reading as soon as possible. The content and format of the reading passages are adapted to the reading strengths of the child. The Visual-Gestalt strand is for the student who has a strong visual sense and learns whole words easily, especially graphically unusual words with concrete meanings (e.g., pizza). The Phonetic-Analytic strand is for the student who learns sounds easily but learns nonphonetic or sight words less easily. Content: Vocabulary exercises introduce, in context, most of the words used in the workbooks. Students can refer to these pages if they are unsure of a word in a passage. Literal Comprehension exercises ask questions about factual details. On the most elementary level, this involves answering yes/no questions or using internal logic. At a more sophisticated level, the student answers "who", "what," "where," and "when" questions about a longer passage. Inferential Comprehension exercises ask students to identify the correct summary or recognize the main idea of a selection. In Organizational Comprehension exercises, the student relates, or organizes, the information in two ways; in sequence-what happened first, next, etc. or by category. In the later books in both strands, the student relates the details of a passage to the main idea. Most pages in both series contain writing activities that can be used at the discretion of the teacher, depending on students' invidiual differences. Starting Comprehension is sold Phonetically or Visually. Teacher's Guide sold separately. Grades PreK-2.
