History, Hands On!: Christopher ColumbusHave any of your students been on a sea voyage? Discovered a new land? Navigated by dead reckoning? Designed their own coat of arms? They will as you go through this book. This exciting new series is designed not only to bring history to life for your students, these activities actually bring history into your classroom! Though Christopher Columbus is in their history books, children learn very little about him aside from the fact that he sailed across the ocean and ended up in the wrong place! Through creative activities such as an action rhyme/skit, songs, map making and games students will discover what motivated Columbus, what problems he faced and what he achieved. Children will eat some of the foods Columbus' crew had to eat every day. They'll experience some of the challenges of living in a new world by trading with one another, listing items they'd have to get from home and learning new words. And they'll become familiar with world geography like never before. Teachers are provided with background information, source materials and resources. So get on board for a voyage your students will never forget. Launch out into the deep and watch them enjoy learning like a fish loves water! Grades 1-4. |

Christopher Columbus and the Discovery of the New WorldWhen Christopher Columbus left Spain with three small ships in 1492, he thought that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean he could reach China. When his ships reached land after five weeks at sea, the Italian sailor was convinced that he had discovered a new route to the rich Indies. It was not until much later that people realized that he had instead found the New World. Columbus had a vision, but few people had faith that he could find the Indies. It took many frustrating years to convince Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to let him seek the Indies to the west, Spain profited greatly from his decision, building a rich empire in the lands he claimed. Columbus never knew he had discovered a New World. He died unaware that his determined voyages had changed the world forever. Contents: Moment of Triumph The Spirit of Exploration The Years of Great Anguish Thirty-Three Days at Sea Admiral of the Mosquitoes The Search for Redemption Chronology Glossary Further Reading Index |
