Students read the word problem, then "solve" it by drawing, and finally, write their response. The drawing experience allows students to concretely visualize the problem and to creatively express its solution. Some concepts that students will be asked to illustrate in this book for grades 4 and 5 are: alternate forms of representing whole number computation; fractional parts of wholes and sets; representing decimal parts of a whole; simple percents; getting information from and creating graphs and charts; writing problems.
