The Red Book is designed for second grade students. This reading program is perfect for the fluent reader and continued phonics instruction will bring confidence and fluency to the beginning reader. The fluent reader will enjoy the exciting stories in the 6 readers and use them to learn grammar, creative writing, higher-order thinking skills, and much more. Features include 36 lessons divided into easy-to-use daily plans; phonics; enrichment activities; handwriting; Teacher Notes in the margin, making lesson preparation easy; assessments to evaluate student progress; phonics facts, grammar guides, and punctuation pointers; and hands-on projects such as games, word-wheels, and flip books. Essential to the program, the student activity workbook may be purchased separately, or the teacher's manual and student activity book can be purchased as a kit. Additional literature passages utilized in this level (which are generally available through the library or catalogs) are Come Over to My House, "The Pocket" from The Zoo That Grew, No Roses for Harry, Abraham Lincoln, Poetry and Mother Goose Rhymes (included in The Red Book); additional read-aloud books utilized are A Tree is Nice, Little Bear, Bravest Dog Ever, The Fire Cat, Yonder, Ox-Cart Man, Corduroy, The Little Island, Billy and Blaze, Harry the Dirty Dog, Abraham Lincoln. The LLAL Student Activity Book contains student instructions for independent work, enrichment exercises such as word puzzles, analogies, logic/reasoning activities and more that are only found in the Student Activity Book.
