20th Century Pop Culture: The Early Years to 1949What a difference a century makes! The intrepid time traveler from 2000 would barely recognize the cultural landscape of 1900. The 20th century has been dubbed by many the "American Century"; during these hundred years, the influence of this great nation spread not just in political and military terms, but in the worldwide explosion of its popular culture. 20th-Century Pop Culture: The Early Years to 1949, brings to life the birth of popular culture. The first 45 years of the 20th century saw great change. Early crazes included barbershop quartets and nickelodeons; the 1920's saw dances such as the Charleston became all the rage while movie screens glowed with the creations of early classics by Mack Sennett and D.W. Griffith. The 1930s saw the beginning of the "golden age" of movie entertainment with stars such as Shirley Temple and Humphrey Bogart emerging and the movie Gone with the Wind changing the face of cinema history forever. And musically, jazz established itself as a legitimate muscial force while crooners such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra filled the radio waves. The outbreak of World War II saw patriotism and heroism take center stage, while the postwar years 1945-1949 witnessed the great reconstruction as mass popular culture really began to take hold: the economy boomed, the population began to enjoy themselves once more, and television screens began to grip the nation. |
