Math You Really Need, Grades 9 & upMake problem-solving a means as well as a goal of instruction- as recommended in NCTM standards. Have students put their math skills to work figuring their batting averages, learning how to avoid rear-end collisions, understanding musical scales, designing a quilt, planning for college costs, or approximating the number of visible stars. These 35 real-world problems show students how to use math as a tool in their own lives. A wide variety of subjects helps them make connections between math and other areas- including sports, travel, music, finances, and household tasks. The activities encourage students to communicate their ideas through writing and discussion as well as by their calculations. The problems actively involve students in working with basic computation, percent and ratio, averages, graphs, geometry, algebra, patterns, interest, estimation, simple trigonometry, and statistics. Teaching notes include explanations and answers for all the problems. They also suggest a varitey of approaches that range from individual investigations to whole-class activities. Helpful appendices cover conversions, powers of ten and scientific notation, and significant figures. |
